The Next Holiday

Though the stores have their Valentine's candy and cards already on neat display, the next official holiday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  I'm just wondering, when is it appropriate to teach a child about Dr. King and his contributions to our society?  As of now, Angie doesn't recognize any difference between African Americans and whites -- except perhaps their hair color; (at a restaurant recently, Angie remarked that almost all of the waiters and waitresses had black hair -- she made no mention that they all also had dark skin.)   We live in a very diverse community and we have neighbors and friends of many different ethnicities, with no distinctions made between any of them.  So, since she doesn't make any distinctions, I don't feel that I should.  I could just skip this holiday entirely and not mention it.  It won't be hard.  And perhaps in the future, when it seems more appropriate, we'll discuss it.
