We are fortunate, at this time, to have construction occurring on our street. We have been witness to the workings of back hoes (which we call "mushing machines" because of their penchant for tamping down dirt with their diggers), bull dozers, pavement rollers, street cleaners and even pavement eaters. I say we're fortunate, because we have something of an obsession with things that go in our house.
Two of our favorite books about things that go are Train Song and Dig, Dig, Digging. The meter in Train Song is so perfect that you feel like a chugging train as you read it. You can read Dig, Dig, Digging with meter, too, although you have to struggle sometimes to fit the sentences into the developed rhythm. But both books are a big hit in our house. We don't own them, we borrow them from the library, and that is part of what makes them even more precious to us. If I had to choose one to own, it would be Train Song.
