With Maddie perched on my knee as I crouched down beside her, we watched one of the two black bears amble down the hill from behind the zoo's protective enclosure, our noses pressed to the glass. "Look," I teased, "she's coming to sniff your belly and see if she likes you!"
Maddie grinned at me. "No she's not," she said confidently.
"Of course not; black bears like to eat fruits and berries," I said, confirming her belief. I felt her tense as she turned her head towards me, her face serious.
"What did you say?" she asked.
"I said they like to eat fruits and berries," I repeated, puzzled. Her body relaxed and she grinned again. "Oh, I thought you said bellies!"
