You Can't Have A Latte Without Leche

We were running out of milk and a big snowstorm was due. Miguel, who was out ferrying his Mom to her Saturday dialysis treatment, was on orders to stop at any grocery to pick up a gallong of milk, a dozen eggs and a jar of strawberry jelly. Now, he's not normally involved in the shopping, so I always wonder if he'll execute grocery lists economically or even correctly. This day was no exception. When he arrived home, he triumphantly handed over the bags -- three bags for three items. As I pulled out the gallon of milk, I immediately noticed the blue cap. He got two-percent, I was thinking as I pulled it free of the bag.

I gasped. "Fat free milk?" I bellowed. "Why on earth did you get fat free milk?" I goggled at the cloudy water inside the jug in utter disbelief.

"I thought it was one percent," he said, peering at the pink label.

"We don't drink one percent," I said. "We never drink one percent." I was flabberghasted. Only half a gallon of whole milk in the fridge and I wasn't going to get out to a grocery for another three days. "How much did it cost?" I asked.

"I don't know," he replied. I gave up. "What are you going to do with it?" he asked. "Throw it away?"

"No, I'll use it in cooking," I said. We certainly couldn't drink the stuff. I'm not even sure it will work in recipes.

I decided to use some of it in a Chai Latte. I had bought some Tazo Chai at BJs a while back; it's a liquid Chai mixture that you just mix with milk, heat and drink. So I did. And let me tell you...

You Can't Have A Latte Without Leche.

2% isn't bad if, say, the store is out of whole or the date is too close. I can't actually taste the difference between the two and I'm pretty picky. Anything less than that is just vile, though, and I must say I miss the satisfying body of REAL whole milk!

We drink only skim here. I actually have come to detest whole milk, because it is too thick and warm. Yuck!

I used to buy either 2% or whole, depending on what ShopRite had on sale (they discount a milk-of-the-week and usually it's skim or 1%, but sometimes it's 2% or even whole but not often). But now that I do all of my milk shopping at BJS (it's a full dollar cheaper (a bit more now, about a dollar thirty) than at shoprite), I only buy whole.
