Angie was trying to reach the light switch for my bedroom, which is a bit higher than other switches in the house. "I can't reach, Mommy," she said. We were upstairs where her play kitchen is, so I recommended, "Use your rolling pin." Since she had previously been shown how to use a long object to increase her reach, I thought nothing of giving the suggestion. A moment later, she called out to me, "It's too round, Mommy." Too round, I thought, but didn't press because I was entertaining Maddie. "Then use your long spoon," I suggested. She ran back to get her stirring spoon. "I still can't reach, Mommy."
Now, I know that spoon is surely long enough (and not too round) to reach the light switch. I got up and went to her. "Show me how you're doing it," I said. She laid the spoon on the floor, stepped onto it with her tip-toes and reached up as far as she could. By the time she said, "See, I can't reach," I was laughing too hard to correct her. No wonder she'd thought the rolling pin too round...it surely is if you intend to stand on it!
After regaining my breath, I instructed her to pick up her spoon and reach with the spoon in her hand to flip the light switch on with the end of the spoon.
I still giggle when I think of it!

"Mommy, why are you making me stand on all these silly things?"
I am sure that was the question "rolling" through her mind at the time.
Too funny!
