The phone rang. I looked at the caller ID -- Toll Free Number, it read. I don't usually answer those, because they're telemarketers. But this time I did. It was my mortgage company, looking to see if they were "meeting all of my financial needs." Of course, the man on the other end of the line was a telemarketer, but I let him talk anyway.
"Do you have any outstanding credit debts, auto loans or any other type of debt that we might be able to help you consolidate?" he asked courteously.
"No," I replied. "We have no debt."
"Wow, that's great," he replied. He then proceeded to ask me if we planned on making any home inprovements or large purchases or . . . . I politely told him that we had no plans to make any large purchases, but that if we did find ourselves in such a position, I would check with the company to see what they had to offer. We hung up amicably.
As I moved to clean up the living room, I thought to myself, I just told someone that I have NO DEBT. And it's true. We don't have ANY debt, and that feels darn good. In an era when it is sooooo easy to spend on credit and not worry about the bill, Miguel and I have managed to keep ourselves out of debt. And knowing that we're doing that on a smaller salary than a lot of people who have debt is even more invigorating. Though we're not always flush, we make do and we have a lovely set of modest belongings. We have a home to be proud of, two cars that run well, a happy and healthy family, and a little, ok tiny, nest egg for that inevitable rainy day.
I'm feeling good right now!
