- Fertilizer on the feet and water drops on the head to make us grow.
- Crawling into the dog pen to play with the hunting dogs -- Lady, Beauty and Rock.
- A long day at the hunting trailer somewhere in New York.
- Helping Uncle John pick carrots -- huge carrots -- that had wintered over underground.
- The yearly tarring of the driveway, and walking the planks between the driveway edges and the garage.
- Sitting in folding chairs in the shade of the garage listening to Uncle John's stories from the past.
- Sitting in the little breakfast nook after kindergarten, waiting for Mommy and Daddy to come home.
- Wrapping the fig tree in winter clothes and enjoying the summer fruits (except for the fig jam Daddy insisted on preparing one year).
- Picking birthday pie apples from the ground beneath the old apple trees.
- Uncle John on his lawnmower.
- Planting a maple sapling that Uncle John swore he would never see any shade from.
Every cloud has a silver lining, they say. I'm a personal believer in optimism. . . if you can't find the silver lining, you're just looking at the cloud from the wrong direction!

You know, I don't remember the fertilizer bit, and nobody probably cared back then, but now, I'm thinking, "Holy cow! Poisoning the children!"
I love you, Beckie.
