Memories

I'll never forget...
  • Fertilizer on the feet and water drops on the head to make us grow.
  • Crawling into the dog pen to play with the hunting dogs -- Lady, Beauty and Rock.
  • A long day at the hunting trailer somewhere in New York.
  • Helping Uncle John pick carrots -- huge carrots -- that had wintered over underground.
  • The yearly tarring of the driveway, and walking the planks between the driveway edges and the garage.
  • Sitting in folding chairs in the shade of the garage listening to Uncle John's stories from the past.
  • Sitting in the little breakfast nook after kindergarten, waiting for Mommy and Daddy to come home.
  • Wrapping the fig tree in winter clothes and enjoying the summer fruits (except for the fig jam Daddy insisted on preparing one year).
  • Picking birthday pie apples from the ground beneath the old apple trees.
  • Uncle John on his lawnmower.
  • Planting a maple sapling that Uncle John swore he would never see any shade from.

You know, I don't remember the fertilizer bit, and nobody probably cared back then, but now, I'm thinking, "Holy cow! Poisoning the children!"

I love you, Beckie.
