So, the insurance compay, as I suspected, has declared my car a total loss. The appraiser came and looked over the rear end: rear bumber mashed in, trunk lid uncolsable, both rear quarter panels buckled and the worst part, both rails (upon which the entire rear end rests) bent and folded. Total cost to repair: $6700; total value of car: $3500. Obviously, not worth the cost of repairs for the insurance company. Usually, they let you buy the car back from them so that you can repair it yourself if you want. But this time, they have declared that the car is unsafe to drive, even if we repair it ourselves. They refuse to let us buy it back, even though the engine, transmission and the rest of the car are in completely good health.
So, we need a new car for $3500 or less (preferably less).

Fun! I hate car shopping. Still, it's better than risking worse happening next time because the car couldn't stand the stress.
Yeah, that's true; but we happen to know people in the car fixin' business and they could have made the correct repairs for us for a lot less than the estimate (due to not so much on the labor charges and junk-yard parts). But oh-well. Miguel fell in love with a used Infinity sedan for $6500 and we're debating the wisdom of actually buying it. I have to go look at it with him. We're still looking around, though.
