Maddie was playing in bed, trying hard to fall asleep, when she heard the jangle of keys in the door. "Papi's home!" she half-yelled, trying to be quiet in the darkness, but not succeeding. I leaned forward in my rocking chair, watching as she popped out of bed. "Mommy! Papi's home!" I scooped her up as she ran to me across the floor, past her sleeping sister, and carried her downstairs for hugs and kisses. She talked excitedly about her day as he carried her back upstairs and snuggled in her bed with her. My job finished, I snuck downstaris and served up a bowl of well deserved ice cream, opened my book and enjoyed both.
A few moments later, Maddie was downstairs in Papi's arms. "She's hungry," he said.
"Would you like some yogurt?" I asked, indulgently. She nodded. As I walked to the fridge, Maddie spied my bowl. "Hey, Papi!" she exclaimed, "Mommy has ice cream! That's a treat and she shouldn't have a treat if she didn't have regular food first. It's not good for her! Right?"
You would never guess that she actually knew that rule from the number of treat-requests she makes in a single day.

It is always so much easier to apply rules to other people than it is to abide by them yourself... :)
