Milestones: Maddie's First Book

Maddie often works in stealth mode.  She's paying attention when I don't think she is and she's ready to do things before I think she's ready.  About a month ago, Maddie started sounding out three letter words.  I had shown her how to blend the sounds multiple times while playing with the alphabet building blocks, but she never seemed to be paying any attention or even to be interested.  Then, one day, she watched my lips as I made the individiual sounds in w-i-g.  After two sounding-outs from me, she exclaimed, "wig!"  She's been on a word-making kick ever since, both blending and segmenting words, even ones that are too complex for her to actually read or spell.

And so, after a month of practicing simple three-letter short-vowel words, she was ready for her first Bob Book.  Yesterday she read "Mat" to me.  We had a little party afterwards and there were stickers in abundance.  She also recited her first poem, which was memorized specifically for recitation purposes.  I discovered she was ready for this when she began reciting a poem that Angie was learning.  We work on tracing letters and making patterns and counting things and arranging the alphabet in order and putting numbers in sequence...

It's interesting for me to go back and do this all over again.  I've already done it with Angie, and so I've forgotten some of the things we did together that pave the way for future lessons.  I really should have written this stuff down, so I could remember the activities we did.  But it's ok, because Maddie's listening to all fo Angie's lessons anyway.
