An Easter Project

I know, Easter isn't until the end of April, but this idea struck, and I had to implement it before it got away from me.  First, I'll show you what we did:

We made Easter eggs that hatch chicks!  The kids loved making these, and even Maddie can do it, though she needed help cutting out her egg and chick parts.

Ok, so here's how we did it.  First, I drew an Easter egg shape and printed it onto construction paper using my inkjet printer.  I just had to cut the construction paper down slightly so that it would fit in the paper feeder.  We each chose a different construction paper color for our eggs.  Then, we decorated our eggs, being careful not to decorate too closely around the midline of the egg, as that is where we had to cut it in half.  We used marker, jewels, foam shapes, buttons and whatever else we could lay our hands on.

Then, we made the chicks.  An oval shape for the body. Two wing shapes and an orange triangle for the beak.  Marker for making the eyes.  Of course, your chick can be any color, but we chose yellow.  Then we glued our chick "inside" the egg by applying glue to the bottom half of the front of the chick and adhering it to the top of the back-side of the bottom half of the egg.  Got that?

Finally, we overlapped the edges of the two halves of the eggs, pierced one corner with a brass paper fastener  or brad and voila! A chick hatching from an easter egg.  A fast and easy project, but one with many different outcomes!
