Garden Pests

I found one of these on my cherry tomato plant yesterday. It was disgustingly fat and had these white seed like things covering its back. Miguel shot it with a jet of water from the hose, but still it hung on. I finally snipped the branch it was on and discarded it. I was grossed out and sure I'd have nightmares, but, thankfully, I slept peacefully!

Ack! Tomato hornworms turn into sphinx moths! The moths are absolutely beautiful, and the only ones who can actually hover. They're easy to raise into moths in a container; we've done it, and we're not real good about keeping "pets". :-) I'm a bit sorry to hear of the poor thing's demise.

The white things on its back are actually parasites that will kill it off naturally. They are beneficial to your garden, so try to keep the infected worms around.

Huh. OK, so my fear of large worms that look like they could eat you is possibly unfounded. We didn't actually kill it, but the blast of water did knock off all of the white things and I only dropped it in a pile of vegetation at the edge of the property, so maybe it's ok. But I don't think I want to run into another one of those!
