Sneaky

We've been trying to get Angie to give up her pacifier for a couple of months now. We began by talking with her about what it was doing to her teeth, making them stick out and look ugly. And we agreed, all of us, that she could only have binky for sleeping -- that meant daytime and nightime sleeping. But Angie caught on pretty quickly and started requesting it for naps in the car and on the couch that she wasn't really taking. So, we switched plans. Binky was only for nighttime sleep, after dinner and bath. But she was loathe to give up that binky.

We visited with Santa last Saturday and Angie spoke with him about leaving milk and cookies for him on Christmas Eve. And that's when Papi had a brilliant idea. "Angie," he said, "We're going to leave Santa your binky, too, so that he can give it to the poor little babies that cry and don't have a binky." She thought about it, asking her usual why's and getting appropriate answers from Papi. Finally, she agreed.

And we haven't used a binky since. It sits on my bedside table, just in case she has a middle-of-the-night attack, but so far, so good. I think we've kicked the habit. And I think we'll try not to start it with the next one!

It's harder to break them of thumb sucking, but if you don't give them a pacifier, there's a sizable chance they won't be suckers at all. Anyway, they look cute with their thumbs in their mouth, and they can always find it by themselves. Makes life easier for mom. :-)
