This is my much despised kitchen. I hate the cabinets...they are too short and in need of updating. And the ugly counter and backsplash and sink...yes, I know they are the same color as my walls, but I think the walls are a nicer color than the counter. And the walls will soon be green, anyway. But this is what it looks like now.

Ah, lovely. Early seventies apartment complex. An excellent decorating style, no?
For a cheap update while you're waiting for the grand remodel, you could always paint the cabinets in a shade of white that compliments your chosen green. My favorite white is called Lotus Flower, by Olympic, and it is just a touch yellow, which gives it a soft, creamy look. That, and decorate with what you use. I always buy little golden nails so I can hang up things like measuring cups and spoons, which were chosen for their visual appeal as much as their usefulness. And pretty but seldom used kitchen whatnots look lovely arranged atop the cupboards. I have ceramic bakers and teapots, a diner style cake stand, crocks and pitchers, and a thrifted cast iron waffle iron up there. My knives hang on a magnetic rack over my favorite chopping counter, and my big spoons and flippers are hung on a rather expensive rack over the stove. In our old place, we had a little wall where we hung pot racks. I loved having my pots there and really miss that here. I found a really cute wire hook thingy at a dollar store once, and I use that to hang my potholders in easy reach. The towel hangs on a tin rooster hook.
All this to say your kitchen really isn't as bad as you think. It just needs some homey touches. I can see that you have a little sense of that, as your soap is not in a store bought squeeze bottle, but a decorative jar.
Now I'm looking harder at that sink picture and I see what you were talking about with the soffet (?). I had that in Illinois and hung plates and odd silver spoons up there. I started a trend, actually. :-)
Absolutely paint them, Beckie! It won't cost much at all, and for a few dollars more, you can update the hardware too. It's a really good way to quickly and cheaply bring your kitchen closer to this decade!
PS Your photos actually make the place seem bigger, I think.
I was thinking about your kitchen last night long after I should have been asleep. I pick the strangest things to fixate on. Anyway, I was thinking that the kitchen is a place where we spend a lot of time. A rather fair chunk of the day, actually. It should be someplace that you really enjoy being in. That said, those wall hangings over the sink there...they look like chinese figures?...they seem so out of place, so not you. Fill your home up with the things you love. It's an expression of you, and Miguel, and Angie, but mostly you. If you love that tablecloth, regardless of what anybody else thinks about it, make that kitchen suit that tablecloth! It obviously speaks to you in some way, but nothing else goes with it. I fell in love with Polish Pottery whilst in Germany, particularly the rich, vibrant cobalt color of the patterns. I've consciously gone about bringing all the rest of my kitchen in line with those beloved plates. It isn't an expensive proposition, but it's a wonderful feeling to cozy up your space and make it your own.
