A Bit of Success

Perhaps I picked the wrong day to start a concerted potty-training effort, but it doesn't really seem to be hindering the process. Sunday evening, I put Angie in undies for the two hours between dinnertime and bedtime, admonishing her every several minutes that we don't go pee-pee or poop in our undies. It seemed to have sunk in, as she didn't wet herself the whole time (and she'd already done her pooping in a diaper earlier in the day.)

So, yesterday, we started from the morning hours in undies, with a diaper only during an outing to the park, just in case as there are no easily accessible toilets there. Again, no mishaps and she even went poop on the potty, which has been a major obstacle for us. After lots of hugs and a few stickers to put on her sticker wall, Papi came home and repeated the praise. But that's where his success ended. While he and Angie were outside, Angie said, "I not poop in my undies," a sure sign that she needs to pee. Papi said, "Ok," not understanding her signals, and moments later, she was peeing in the yard. After I explained it to him, he understood and promised not to let it happen again. "That's why you have to keep asking her if she has to pee, too," I said.

Later, after she'd been changed into new undies and pants, he and Angie were upstairs playing when she once again idicated that she needed to pee. Papi, thinking I had put her in a diaper, told her to go ahead and pee. She did...all over the carpet. He got upset, then realized that he shouldn't have told her to pee even if she was wearing a diaper, since we're trying to get her to go on the potty. Inconvenience for us is not an excuse, I reminded him.

So, he put her in a diaper for the rest of the evening, since I was going to work, and, from reports, she kept it dry until bath time when she emptied her bladder on the potty! Go Angie!

And today, she's been wearing undies since morning, even through a 3 hour outing to go shopping and have lunch with Papi. She did pee on a public potty, though she protested mightily. She doesn't want to wear a diaper, and refused to let me put one on her before our outing. So now, she's sleeping upstairs, in her crib, in her undies. I'm hoping not to have a mess to clean up when she wakes.

So far, so good!

Good work, Beckie! Now you'll know you're ready when you put her to BED in undies. (Yes, you. She'll probably be ready before you are!)
