I made a pot roast the other night in my slow cooker. Usually, I use carrots and celery, and sometimes potatoes. But, while browsing through a slow cooker recipe book, I discovered a similar recipe that used root veggies like turnips and parsnips. Hmmm, thought I, I've never tasted those before...wonder what they're like.
So, off to Pathmark I went, Angie in tow, to seek out the aforementioned root veggies. To my dismay, Pathmark sold them only as part of a "kit" for stew: celery, carrots, parsnips and turnips all packaged together in rather small quantities for rather an exorbitant price. So I went to Shoprite where I hit the jackpot.
Parsnips are like carrots, but white and with a much different flavor...I'd like to describe it, but I just can't. Turnips are like large, white radishes and taste similarly. I thoroughly enjoyed them in the pot roast, as did Angie. Miguel, however, was very distrusting of them and made a face when he accidentally ate one.
Anyway, if you've never had them, try them. If you have had them, how would you describe the flavor of a parsnip? And what do you use them in?
