Every cloud has a silver lining, they say. I'm a personal believer in optimism. . . if you can't find the silver lining, you're just looking at the cloud from the wrong direction!

My New Job
Well, it pays $13 an hour. Not bad, since I don't have to do anything but show up and work with their materials and their kids. However, I'm coming to realize just how awful these Learning Centers are (Sylvan, Huntington, Score, Kuman). I can't see how any kid can actually improve in the settings they use. It's a lot of drill and practice, with very little support from the personnel. I can't believe people would choose such an expensive option over private tutoring. It just doesn't make sense!

There's a saying in the advertising world: "Repetition is reputation." (That was difficult to type correctly! lol) When you child is struggling, the first thing you think of is whats been drilled into your head as the best choice: Sylvan and Huntington learning centers, who seem to be the most advertised. Most people seem to just go with their first thought instead of researching it. They might choose a private tutor after these centers fail, though.
:cough:homeschooling :)
While homeschooling may be ideal for some, it is not the answer to every educational issue. A great many people in the world are not capable of teaching their children. An overburdened public education system is not ideal either. But it is better than a parent with misinformation or no ability to relay information or no conceptual understanding of difficult topics. When public education is not enough, and parents cannot fill the gap, some other solution must be found. Private tutoring is ideal in some circumstances, while small group learning is better in others. Either way, it is the child's learning style that must be considered before such a choice is made. Regardless, I don't think the learning centers are living up to their promises.
Then why would you choose to work for one? Just curious.
Because I need a night job and they're hiring. Summer tutoring is slim pickin's. And, of course, I'll bring my own educational philosophy and style to the job. . .
Good answer! Thanks for clarifying. Sometimes, people are willing to sacrifice their own beliefs in order to make money. I was hoping you were not one of those people. It is never worth compromising yourself.
