While I was pregnant, during my first ultrasound, in fact, my doctors discovered that I have an ovarian cyst. Initially, it was quite large, and my doctors indicated that the size might be due to all the extra hormones from my pregnancy. "We'll check on it after you have the baby." So, they've been checking. It's about half the size that it was (in linear measurements, which makes it one quarter of its original size by area) which is good news, but it hasn't disappeared.
Apparently, every time your ovaries get read to release an egg, a little cyst (fluid filled sac) forms with the egg in it. When the egg is released, the sac bursts and sends the egg on its journey to your uterus. Sometimes, these cysts for without an egg inside, or they don't go away once the egg is released. The reseal themselves and continue to hold fluid.
I don't know what kind I have. I have to talk to my doctors tomorrow about the exam I had yesterday and see what they know. If it doesn't go away on its own, there is a possibility that I'll need laparoscopic surgery, but I'm hoping that's not an issue. We'll see.
