Everything I've read about getting babies to sleep well says that for the half-hour to hour before bedtime, you should have your baby engaged in calming activities, and that your bedtime routine should consist of calming things like a calm bath, a story or two, or gentle games. I don't know about anyone else's babies, but mine doesn't find anything calming. Everything is worth getting excited about, from a piece of junk mail to a splashy bath to a board book that she just has to get her hands (and mouth) on. The only activities that are calming (and only if she's very tired already) are rocking and nursing. Although, lately, especially during the day, even nursing has become an "activity" in the true sense of the word. She doesn't stay put for long and will stand up, kneel and otherwise move around while she is latched on.
I can't say that I mind that she's so active. She makes everything fun, even if it is sometimes frustrating.

My calming routine is to pin Rosie to the pillow and tickle kiss her underarms until she can't laugh any harder. Sometimes I do the belly to mix it up a bit. And of course, I could never resist under the chin. Hmmm. Maybe that's why she can't settle down for sleep. Oh, well. I love her giggle too much to give it up.
